Teshio-gawa and Kushiro-gawa are famous for the points where Sakhaline taimen expectable.
The rivers in the east are flat and calm, generally.
The upper of Ishikari-gawa and Tokachi-gawa are adventurous mountain streams and dam lakes.
Mu-kawa, Saru-gawa, Shiribetsu-gawa, Yoichi-gawa have many good branches.
At the south, “leg like” Oshima peninsula, the mountains face the sea. So steep stream begins just from the bottom in many rivers. Such rivers have many good points, on the other hand, especially hard climbing and carefulness for brown bear are required.

In order to approach mountainous area, anglers use the maintenance roads of local forestry office, then walk to the points. Appropriate knowledge, tactics, preparation are needed.

Conservation

In Hokkaido, there are many dams, over 10,000 including small ones, cutting off the continuity of the streams. They say those are needed for disaster prevention, however obviously they give severe influence on the biodiversity. It’s a tragedy for both.
